General Dentistry > Sealants and Fillings

Tooth decay can cause serious damage and, if left uncorrected, can lead to tooth loss.  There are two ways to address decay - prevention and repair.

Obviously, preventing tooth decay should be the first objective of oral hygiene.   Regular brushing and flossing help, but often times their effectiveness is limited by the very structure of the teeth - especially back teeth.  They can have natural fissures that cannot be brushed effectively and become natural collectors of plaque, the cause of decay.   The dentist can seal these fissures by applying plastic and bonding it to the tooth.  By eliminating the place for plaque to gather, the risk of decay is greatly reduced.

However, even with the best of care we sometimes get decay.  Since the decay must be removed, the earlier decay is detected (link to hygiene) the better.  Once removed we now can use new materials for fillings that can match your natural tooth color.   These materials are actually stronger that the older type of “silver“ fillings and leave your smile looking completely natural.
